The Importance of the Right Flange Size: How to Make Pumping Comfortable and Effective

At Dragonfly Lactation, we believe every Mom deserves comfortable, efficient pumping. Learn why correct flange size matters and how to find yours. Why the Right Flange Size Matters for Pumping

At Dragonfly Lactation, we know pumping can feel overwhelming, but the right tools and support make all the difference. One of the most overlooked pieces of the puzzle is the flange — the funnel-shaped part that goes over your nipple when you pump.

Many families don’t realize that using the wrong flange size can lead to pain, clogged ducts, mastitis or low milk output. The good news? A simple size check can help you pump more comfortably and protect your milk supply.

What Is a Flange, Anyway?

Your breast pump flange (sometimes called a breast shield) fits directly over your nipple, areola, and breast, creating a seal so the pump can draw out milk.

Breasts and nipples come in all shapes and sizes — so should your flanges! Most pumps come with a standard size, but that “one size” rarely fits everyone well.

Signs Your Flange Size Might Be Wrong

Here’s what we often see at Dragonfly Lactation when a Mom’s flange isn’t the right size:

🌿 Pumping hurts, pinches, or leaves your nipples sore or cracked 🌿 Your nipple rubs or pulls uncomfortably against the sides of the tunnel 🌿 Your nipple turns white (blanching) during or after pumping 🌿 You feel like you’re not emptying your breasts well 🌿 You see swelling or puffiness around your nipple

If any of these sound familiar — don’t worry. We can help you fix it!

How to Find Your Correct Flange Size

Finding your best fit starts with measuring your nipple:

1️⃣ Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the diameter of your nipple (not the areola) in millimeters. 2️⃣ Measure when your nipple is gently stimulated, since it expands. 3️⃣ Add about 1-2 mm to that measurement — that’s your starting flange size! 4️⃣ Check your pump brand’s sizing guide — they can vary slightly.

Most Moms need to try a couple of sizes to find the most comfortable fit.

Tips for Comfortable Pumping

✨ Re-check your size — your body can change postpartum. ✨ Try a bit of nipple cream or coconut oil to reduce friction. ✨ Make sure you’re sitting comfortably and that your pump is on the right suction setting. Hight suction does not mean more milk! ✨ Book a consult with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) — like us! — to get a personalized flange fitting.

Better Fit = Better Milk

The right flange size helps your pump do its job: removing milk efficiently and comfortably. This protects your milk supply, supports your breastfeeding goals, and keeps your pumping sessions stress-free.
